The Capitol Theatre
is a classic art deco theatre. The first Picture palace
to be built in Australia, the theatre was designed by
Walter Burley Griffin and opened in 1924.
Recognised in Australia and described by Australian
Architect Robyn Boyd as one of the most beautiful
cinemas ever built, the Capitol is world renown for its
famous ornate plaster ceiling which conceals 4000
coloured light globes, creating a crystaline effect.
Classified by the Australian National Trust as a
treasure, the Capitol currently awaits registration on
the world register for significant buildings.
The theatre was reconfigured in 1965, reducing seating
capacity from 2100 to 700. During this makeover, the
theatre was cut in half, the stalls (orchestra seats)
ripped out to create a shopping arcade. |
