Joe E. Brown
In late 1966, my parents and I were holidaying in Honolulu, Hawaii and that year happened to be the 25th anniversary of Pearl Harbour. We were staying at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Prior to our leaving, Channel 7 in Melbourne had been playing a lot of Joe. E. Brown's early talkies on a Saturday morning, and I had grown to appreciate him.
Imagine my surprise, when strolling around the gardens of the Hotel one morning with my father, I clapped eyes on Joe E. Brown who was also talking a morning promenade.
Being shy, I goaded my father into introducing me to Mr. Brown and of course I then gooed and gushed about how I liked looking at his old pictures.

Mr. Brown was absolutely enthralled that I was watching his pictures in Australia (he had been there in  the 1950's for a musical comedy season) and we chatted for nearly half anhour or so. He was wonderfully charming and of a very sweet nature.

It wasn't until much later that I learned of the sad reason Joe E. Brown was in Honolulu. He had lost a son at Pearl Harbour.
